Planned Topics
A New Decade for the CME Provider
Jann Torrance Balmer, PhD, FACME
President, Alliance for Continuing Medical Education
There is a national initiative to apprehend CME in
healthcare. Our own competence, performance and program outcomes are
measured and evaluated, and are now more visible as we lead the way
in cementing a foundation of evidence and high quality education
standards. We will discuss where we have been and where we are going
in the next decade.
The Changing World of CME: Update on ACCME &
Regulatory Issues
Stephen M. Lewis, MA, CCMEP
President, Global Education Group
&
Suzette Tomaska, MBA
Associate Director of CME for Purdue Pharma
CME Providers have been rapidly changing policies
and practices to address regulatory scrutiny while entering a new
world in which CME advances, science, clinical practice, and patient
outcomes. Learn where CME is headed, in terms of addressing
educational needs, improving competencies, and securing funding and
other resources for the benefit of all stakeholders.
The Changing World of CME: Maintenance of
Certification (MOC)
Mellie Villahermosa Pouwels, MA, Program
Director
Maintenance of Certification, ABMS
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has
evolved their re-certification programs “to assure that the
physician is committed to lifelong learning and competency in a
specialty and/or subspecialty by requiring ongoing measurement of
core competencies.” Physicians will need meet MOC requirements that
include CME activities approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.
During this event we will learn more about these requirements and
their role in CME.
ACCME Lessons Learned: Non-Compliance to Best
Practices
Annika Gill, MA, CCMEP
Managing Director, AOE Consulting
Standards for Commercial Support (SCS):
Implementation of the ACCME’s Updated Accreditation Criteria has
identified common areas of non-compliance (~45% with SCS). Providers
found in non-compliance, including the SCS, must follow a new ACCME
Rapid Response process to re-establish its accreditation status. The
process not only guides a provider back into compliance, but the
process can facilitate a provider’s establishment of CME Best
Practices.
Addressing non-compliance begins with assessment,
followed by a provider’s plan for improvement, and then
implementation of stated change to demonstrate performance in
practice. Drawing from case studies, this session will provide
participant examples of how organizations have successfully moved
from non-compliance to better and best practices.
ACCME Lessons Learned: Non-Compliance to Best
Practices
David Price, MD
Medical Director, Kaiser Permanente
National CME Program
Gaps in Practice and Analyzing Change:
The Updated Criteria was released in 2006, and it is reported that
nearly 28% of providers are found out of compliance with
“Professional Practice Gaps”, and 32% with “Gathering and Analyzing
Change”.
How can we construct an action plan to more
effectively and efficiently meet these two criteria? This
facilitated work session will examine and establish procedures for
providers to improve.
What are your dilemmas? Do you have a Best Practice
to share? Assist us and bring both!
